Dear Friends,
I, Neal Rayner, will be embarking on my swim of the English Channel
from Dover England to Cap Gris Nez, France (or vicinity) sometime
between August 8th and August 20th, 2005. This is my website full
of information and pics.
In England, I will be waiting for my turn in the boat The Sea Satin,
captained by Lance Oram of the Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation.
The weather needs to be good enough to have a good shot at completing
the swim. Hence, windy or stormy conditions that create swells much
larger than 5 feet or extremely choppy conditions are something I
will try to avoid. The swim will take me anywhere from 11-17 hours
and is approximately 23.7 land miles long - assuming I don't miss
Cap Gris Nez and have to swim another couple of miles.
According to the rules I will have only my Speedo, a swim cap and
goggles. My support crew of Angie, Eric (my brother) and Dane will
be feeding me Cytomax and gels every half hour or so through the swim.
I can expect the water temperatures to be anywhere from about 60 F
to 64 F during this time of year. There aren't sharks in the water,
but jellyfish can become a real problem, as the water gets warmer.
If you are on the email group you will get updates of my swim as best
as we can give from the boat.
You can also contact
me while I'm in England.
Thanks for your support,
Neal |
